HIST 31103 — The Rise of Monotheism

3 credits · 3 hours

This course examines Israelite monotheism from its polytheistic origins alongside its neighbors - including the Sumerians, Egyptians, Babylonians, Indians, Greeks, and Phoenicians - and explores what prompted Israel to embrace monotheistic theology. Israel's transformation will be contrasted with the independent rise of monotheisms possibly found in Egyptian, Classical, and other theological systems. (Typically offered: Spring Even Years)
