From Absorbable sutures to Zirconium alloy hip implants, biomaterials science influences nearly every aspect of medicine. This course focuses on the study of different classes of biomaterials and their interactions with human tissues. Topics include: biocompatibility; biofouling; hemocompatibility; wound healing response; foreign body response; design of orthopedic, dental and cardiovascular implants; ophthalmological and dermatological materials; degradable polymers for drug delivery; nanobiomaterials; smart biomaterials and the regulation of devices and materials by the FDA.
