This course involves the preparation and study of representative compounds of aliphatic and aromatic series including organic synthesis, reaction mechanisms, and structural theory. Topics include structure, bonding, molecular properties, reactivity and nomenclature of alkanes, cycloalkanes, alkenes and alkynes; stereochemistry, alkyl halides, reaction mechanisms, nucleophilic substitution and elimination, conjugated dienes, mass spectrometry; IR, NMR, and UV spectroscopy, benzene, aromaticity and electrophilic aromatic substitution, organometallic compounds, alcohols, phenols and ethers, aldehydes and ketones, carboxylic acids and derivatives, dicarbonyl compounds, carbohydrates, amines, amino acids and proteins, heterocyclic compounds, and nucleic acids.
