PHIL 3A — History of Ancient Philosophy

This course introduces students to the history of ancient western philosophy, specifically the writings and ideas of the Pre-Socratics, Plato, Aristotle, and the philosophers of the Hellenistic period. Topics may include the sources and limits of knowledge, the nature of reality, the nature of virtue and right action, and theories of the good life. Readings will include selections drawn from the primary texts of Plato and Aristotle as well as other primary and secondary sources on the ancient philosophers.
