COMM 15 — Computer-Mediated Communication
This course offers students both historical and current knowledge of mediated communication technology with an emphasis on how those modalities can affect communication. The course will examine how different types of computer mediated communication technologies such as e-mail, instant messaging, video conferencing, Twitter, podcasts, blogs, and social network sites influence communication processes. Students will explore how mediated communication is used to create and maintain relationships, in addition to how mediated communication has become integral to the work environment. Other topics include privacy and safety issues, cyberbullying, and the impact of viral and/or fraudulent posts. Overall, this course emphasizes how mediated communication can influence the formation, transmission, and reception of messages.
