ART 26 — Survey of Non-Western Art

This course is a survey of art outside the western European tradition, focusing on the major artistic traditions of Africa, Oceania, Indigenous North America, and the Pre-Columbian Americas, from ancient times up to the impact of European contact. The course will focus on the role of the visual arts in non-western cultural perspectives, including discussion of sacred ritual, social and cultural constructs, materials, and artistic creation. Emphasis will be placed on the recognition of works from major civilizations, their artistic traditions, and what can be revealed about the cultures and peoples who created them from historical and cultural viewpoints. Course content will include the availability of a trip to a internationally recognized art venue.
