This course examines sport and fitness as social institutions and cultural practices. Students explore how participation, representation, and access are shaped by factors such as class, gender, race, sexuality, and globalization. Major sociological perspectives, including functionalist, conflict, interactionist, and feminist theories, are applied to topics such as socialization, identity, media influence, commercialization, and ethics in sport. Emphasis is placed on the role of sport and fitness in education, politics, and social change.
