ARET3308 — Advanced Engineering Design

Students engage in advanced engineering design using CAD software. The intent of the course is to guide students to a better understanding both of how parts are designed, as well as how to create and analyze blueprints. Students learn to visualize parts and designs spatially. More specifically, the course will impart a certain level of proficiency in the advanced engineering design software, preparing them for further education in the software and/or adding value to their education when they reach industry. Students will be able to create 3D models from which tangible counterparts could be created, and will gain an understanding of important geometric constraints such as perpendicularity, concentricity, symmetry, angularity, parallelism, and orthographic projection which will them make appropriate design decisions on specific models, as well as in assemblies. Students will examine and assess how parts are designed; evaluate the various geometric constraints that make up specific models and assemblies; create and analyze blue prints; design and create 3D models utilizing an alternative CAD software program; organize and display working drawings using an alternative CAD software; apply file management techniques.This course is an introduction to the SolidWorks 3D CAD software.
