MUSIC 101 — Music Theory and Culture I

Composition and analysis of music from history and world music cultures: Analysis, history and cultural significance of rhythm and meter as exemplified in music literature and music of oral tradition; basic properties of sound; intervals; diatonic scales and triads; diatonic chords, basic cadential formulas and phrase structure; dominant seventh; figured bass symbols; and non-harmonic tones. History of notation and practice will be discussed as students develop skills in handwritten notation.
