ARTH 33 — AMERICAN ART

This course surveys the major developments in American painting, sculpture, and architecture from the early settlement of North America to the conclusion of World War II. The course investigates the role visual culture has played in the United States as Americans have attempted to situate themselves culturally, economically, and politically within their own society and the world at large. Works of art and architecture are discussed in light of their unique cultural and historical context.
