4 credits · 4 hours

4.0 HR. (OC) Prerequisite: PHYS 112 with a grade of C or better. This course is an introduction to the analysis of 2-D (dimensional) force systems applied to static machine elements. Methods of calculating the stresses produced by the force systems are introduced. Emphasis is placed on the calculation of axial, bending, and torsional stresses and combinations of those stresses. The concept of principal stress is introduced. The laboratory is designed to supplement the classroom presentation and involves measuring forces and stresses with electronic instrumentation.
