ETHS 131 — F African-American History II 3 Units
54 hours lecture per term. This course is a survey of key events, individuals, institutions, and experiences that shaped the history and culture of African Americans in the United States from the era of post-enslavement to the present day. Students will analyze historical themes and events through an intersectional analysis that interrogates categories of identity and power, including race, ethnicity, class, gender, sexuality, religion, etc. The course explores theoretical concepts and social processes, including the relationship between the social construction of Blackness, white supremacy, and U.S. imperialism; Black migration and labor; racialization and the persistence of racialized social inequalities; and the long historical struggle for Black civil rights, racial justice, and liberation.
