ETHS 129 — F Introduction to African-American Studies 3 Units

54 hours lecture per term. This course is an introduction to the field of African-American Studies. An interdisciplinary approach is employed to study the various experiences of African Americans and their contributions to American society and culture. The course covers the development of African-American Studies as a field of academic inquiry as well as historical and contemporary topics including African origins; the social construction of race and the racialization of African Americans; the development of African-American culture; class, gender, and sexuality in the African-American community; African-American creative production; the struggles of the African-American family; African-American political life; and the empowerment of African Americans through liberation and self-determination.
