ENVR 460 — Advanced Riparian Restoration and Management

In this course, students will apply landscape-scale, whole watershed-level thinking to understand complex restoration and management topics in riparian systems. Fluvial, geomorphic, and ecological concepts in river, stream, riparian, wetland, and meadow ecosystems, with a special focus on the Sierra Nevada, will be explored. Theories relating to restoration and management will be reviewed, including how to effectively monitor projects for long-term performance. This course will include hands-on experience observing and analyzing newly restored systems as well as visiting mature restoration projects. Tensions within the community of restoration ecologists and differing philosophies regarding restoration will be explored.
