This course presents an introductory survey to the ideas and structures of gender in world history from ancient times to the present. Students will compare the diverse gendered experiences of people in the past and present. Study will begin with an exploration of the gender structures of ancient peoples and societies and conclude with a focus on the gendered realities of today's globalized world. This approach will provide students a foundation from which to analyze how social, political, and cultural developments in Africa, Asia, the Americas, and Europe have intersected with historical changes in gender norms.
