DANC 1401 — DANC-1401 African Dance I

Introduction to the foundational movements, rhythms, and traditions of West African dance. Emphasis on basic movement vocabulary, rhythmic phrasing, call-and-response structures, and community-building. Develop basic coordination, musicality, body and spatial awareness, and performance and ensemble skills. Explore dances associated with celebrations of life, rites of passage, harvest, healing, and storytelling. Discussion of historical and cultural contexts.
