Total Hours Required 144.0 Certificate of Competency, Intermediate English as a Second Language (ESL) The Certificate of Competency focuses on the development of fundamental language and communication skills in English. Program emphasis is on developing reading strategies for comprehension, responding to intermediate-level readings, and sentence and paragraph development. Students build listening comprehension and conversational fluency and norms through small and whole group discussions and beginning presentations. This program takes a content-based approach to instruction, connecting skills to cultural context, focusing on topics of health and/or learning to earn and planning for success in present and future goals.
